Kotor is UNESCO World Heritage, and one of those amazing places so unique in its setting and history that leaves its visitors breathless. The town lies huddled underneath the rocks of Mt. Lovćen at the farthest end of the Gulf of Kotor. The town core, enclosed by walls, is a muddle of constricted streets bordered with tall stone edifices and paved with multicolored slabs that only reveal their true beauty after the rain.
After the earthquake in 1979, the old town of Kotor is completely renovated keeping its strong medieval look, with green shutters, red roofs, and stone houses. When Kotor got the new shape adapted to its visitors, it becomes one of the biggest tourist attractions on the Adriatic. Our hostel is located right in the middle, with the view of its symbols, St. Tryphon cathedral, St Giovanni fortress, and city walls. It is surrounding by everything that guests need like shops, restaurants, cafes, greenmarket, etc.

WHERE TO GO AND WHAT TO DO
One of the nicest things to do here is to go “lost” in Kotor’s Old Town, finding your own way through layers of its history and discovering interesting details. Here you can find some ideas about what to do and where to go in our lovely town.
THE CITY WALLS OF KOTOR
The completely preserved town walls of Kotor, 4,5 km in length, are one of the chief reasons that helped Kotor reach UNESCO’s list of world heritage sights. This extensive fortification system is even more impressive considering that it climbs up the fearsome hill behind the town surmounting its many cliffs to reach the top of 260m above sea level where the Fort of St John stands. Here formerly stood the Illyrian and Roman strongholds even before the “lower town” (present-day Kotor) developed and in a later era the hilltop was dominated by a Byzantine castle
The walls encircling the town and the hill were finished in the 14th century except for some sections which were unassailable to such an extent that they needed no protection. The medieval walls got their present-day appearance in the 16th and 17th centuries when they were reinforced and strengthened by the Venetians to withstand cannon fire. The fort was used by the army until the end of the Second World War. One of the fort’s peculiarities is an endemic species of slug almost blank in color Clausiliacatharenisis which lives only amongst its walls. Climbing to the top of St John’s is a must for each and every visitor of Kotor. This 45 minute climb up its stone stairways with a total of 1,450 steps opens aerial views on Kotor and dramatic vistas along its bay.
Kotor is surrounded by three mountains: Lovcen, Vrmac, and Orjen which are located in close proximity. That is why Kotor is a paradise for hikers. It is recommended not to hike alone but hire a licensed guide. Trails are not difficult but due to a big incline and high temperatures especially in summer, you need to be in good body condition.
CANYONING IN THE RIVER SKUDRA
For extreme sports, we suggest the canyoning of the Skurda river located just outside of the old town. The canyon is one of the most demanding in Montenegro and is a challenge even for the most experienced. The canyon is one of the biggest natural attractions in the town. If you are interested in this activity you can find videos on the internet and hire guides to be able to do this activity.
KAYAKING IN THE BAY OF KOTOR
Kotor Boka Bay coast is not open sea which is why there are no big waves, so the activities on the water are limited but kayaking is very popular in the bay and a great way to explore the bay. You can rent a kayak from April until the end of October and spend a lovely day on the sea.
