ABOUT ALBANIA TOUR (TIRANA) with mh travel

MH Travel Agency organizes a unique one day visit to Tirana, the capital of Albania. Guests would be able to look around and learn about the center of Tirana, visit some museums, have lunch or do shopping without any hurry. The center of Tirana is not too large, and doesn’t have too many attractions but is certainly interesting nonetheless. If you want to know more about modern life in Albania, the way its largest city develops, to see how people in Tirana live today, this is a perfect tour for you. You will be surprised how much this city is pleasant, full of color, calm and cheap. If you decide to take this tour believe when we say, you will spend a beautiful and fulfilling day, above all thanks to the atmosphere in Tirana.

We start from Kotor at 8:00 am, taking guests from Budva at 8:45 and then we drive to Podgorica where we will pick up guests at 10:00 am. Because of the time we need to reach Tirana, we will stop early for a breakfast break and then continue towards Tirana. The city of Tirana has about one million inhabitants and when we approach it we will need about half an hour to reach the city center. While approaching the center you will have an opportunity to see the poor suburban area where trading is done the traditional way, on the streets, and where you can still see brick built buildings with no façade built during the time of the communist leader Enver Hoxha which was the head of the state from 1944 until 1985.

During his rule, Albania was a very closed state, which was not well-known. Obsessed with the idea that a new big war will happen during his rule, he ordered the building of 700 000 bunkers across the whole country so Albania would be protected from land attacks. But the war never happened. In modern history, Albania never experienced a civil war, nor war with its neighbors or any other country, so the bunkers remained only as a tourist attraction. Few bunkers, still remain in the center of the city and guests can enter and take a look. Most bunkers in Albania are demolished, some became restaurants, souvenir shops or art workshops.

In the time of Enver Hoxha total number of cars was around 500. Today, especially in the center there are lots of cars so please be careful when crossing the streets, as some of the drivers don’t respect the rules completely so accidents are common. In the last couple of years, the local government made a great effort to make roads better and discipline the drivers, which is noticeable but we still recommend caution. Tirana is a big student center and the number of young people make more than 50% of the city population. People of Tirana are pleasant, welcoming and will help if you have questions. Besides Albanian, most people speak good Italian and then English.

Don’t be surprised if you see somebody running across the street as some old habits still remain in Tirana and other parts of Albania, you can accept it as the atmosphere of the city. Don’t compare Tirana to western cities or the city you are coming from. That is why they say that Tirana is the last secret in Europe. You can’t find world-famous and luxurious brands on every corner, but Tirana has its local charm and local traders which takes you back to times when cities were slow-paced and cheap and not so generic. After the end of the communist rule Albanian people started traveling out of the country, many artists wanted to erase the communist darkness by painting the facades in vivid colors, which gave a new happier look to the city. The criminal on the streets is not common, the city is safe and tourists welcomed. If you want to take a panoramic photo you can go to the Sky Tower where you can also find a restaurant a have lunch. Prices are very good, sometimes unbelievably low for the quality of the service. You can’t find a traditional bazaar in the city center nor an old town or a fortress. Tirana doesn’t have an old core. Its center is Skanderbeg square with two main boulevards and it’s no larger than 3 square kilometers. As there are no hills and the center is flat it makes a pleasant walk with enough shade, as in summer the temperature can rise up to 40°C.

Main attractions in the center are National History Museum, Et'hem Bey Mosque, National Gallery of Arts, Pyramid, City of Hall, Grand Park, TID Tower ( the highest building in Tirana), Sky Tower, Resurrection Cathedral in Tirana ( orthodox cathedral, one of the largest in Europe), Taivani Center ( restaurant complex located in Rinia Park), monuments of Mother Albania, Skanderbeg, Mother Theresa, Thomas Wilson (USA former president), Clock Tower, University of Tirana, Post Block Memorial as well as Skanderbeg and Mother Theresa squares. All of these are located next to each other. Our guide will show you the location when we arrive in Tirana and then you can explore on your own and we believe that you will find even more interesting things in this lively city.

After our visit to Tirana, we will be heading back for Podgorica, Budva, and Kotor.

NOTE: We can also organize a private Albania Tour (Tirana) as well as for the groups of 8+ number of passengers.
